Project

Project Name: Oily Mess--the Truth about the Gulf Coast Oil Spill.

Summary

The truth about the oil spill as reported by students who live on the Gulf Coast.

Project Planning

Use the following as a starting point only, you do not need to stick to this template

What?

The topic of study is fossil fuels, specifically drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico
The outcomes are twofold: students will conduct field research in their local area and publish their findings using technology, students will collaborate and communicate with elementary students in New Jersey to answer specific questions about the oil spill and the true impact it has had along the Gulf Coast.
Students will be assessed in two ways: rubric for their research and reporting, collaboration and communication via posts on the internet.
Students will use the Flip cam to create live reports of events that occur on our beaches. Students will be investigating the soil and water on a weekly basis to look for changes in the deposition of oil along the shores(quantity over a designated area). Students will be encouraged to collaborate with other coastal schools in Alabama, Mississppi and Louisiana to compare data. In addition, students will collaborate with local agencies to report chemical evidence of contamination in the water and in the tissues of sea life. Students will be using wikis to collaborate and communicate ideas.

Who?

Students are between 11-13, middle school 6-8, Earth Science and Physical Science will be conducting this experiment, however, this would also apply to middle school life science, environmental science and some high school science classes. Collaboration with elementary students would be best at the fourth and fifth grade level.

When?

The time of year that this project will take place will start in September and continue throughout the year. Oil is expected to continue throughout the year. The last month of school for students is June 10th, 2011.

Where?

What type of websites and tools will you use. Students will use wikipages and flipcams, flash drives, computers, moviemaker software.
Webpages that students will access include NOAA and EPA just to name a few.
Hyperlink to the tools and give examples of what would be done.
Students will interact with one another to record their interviews while at the beach. Students will evaluate their recordings and use movie maker to edit.
Students will answer questions through wiki and their videos to compare what the national media is reporting or has reported about oil on the Gulf Coast.
Students will post their videos in You Tube and the Wiki.
The teacher will use the video monitoring website to evaluate all videos prior to posting. See Vicki Davis.
Students will share, work, and collaborate in the classroom, computer lab, and at home.

Why?

Why is this project important. Include statistics and facts about why this is a needed project. "Sell" this to the world about why it is an issue that should be addressed and why this particular project can make a difference. What will you use to share this? This project is important to the Florida Gulf Coast because the economical impact has been severe. Many individuals have lost their job and can no longer support their family. Tourism months of March through September declined greatly due to the negative press covering the oil spill. Many small businesses need the summer money to carry them through the winter. There have already been a large number of business closings and this has impacted the real estate market and property values.

How?

Any other implementation items that you wish to share. What challenges will this project face as schools look at implementing it? How will you overcome obstacles and arguments against this project or methods used? How will it be managed and facilitated by teachers? Will students be leaders? How will you know if this is done well? How will you encourage student participation? How will you motivate? How will you know if the project is successful?

The Future

What needs to be done next? Are there any topics that need to be researched further to implement this idea?
