Project Name: Water Wize

Summary: Construct knowledge of water quality from 3 locations and communicate via wiki.

Educational outreach to build student awareness and involvement for protecting water resources in Gainsville, GA, Edenprairie, MN, and Texarkana, TX and AR.
by student basic monitoring of water bodies and identification of water related issues. Students will collaborate to create solutions to regional water quality issues.

What? Water Issues Across America

World Water Monitoring Day
What is the topic of study?
Water quality across 3 communities in North America.
What are the outcomes?
identification of major sources of water issues and possible solutions
How would the students be assessed?

What will they be doing?
testing water, sharing results on a national venue
water effieciency at our individual schools
water sheds; each lake is in a different local water shed, but how do they connect on a geographic level?

Middle School Science Focus


Begins in September, but steps will continue throughout the year.


Wiki google earth, document lakes


Students will report results to Georgia DNR, Minnesota DNR, and Texas DNR.


We are going to follow the EPA water quality model. All of our students will participate. We will publish results globally on-line, to the proper authorities, and to our local press as needed.
GPS data uploaded to GIS.

The Future

All students will need to understand watershed basics. Each of our regions pull on a different base watershed, and each region will be faced with different issues.
Our students take an active role to assure the well being of our communities' water resources.




Students will research the individual lakes that they are studying. What size, how old is it, purpose of it, history, the name. Evaluate lake statistics such as outflow, size, depth, etc.
